Open-Loop vs. Closed-Loop Geothermal Systems
Open-loop systems use groundwater. Closed-loop systems circulate fluid through buried pipe.
Geothermal heat pumps exchange heat with the ground. The way they do it falls into two main categories.
Closed-loop systems
A sealed network of buried pipe circulates a fluid that absorbs or releases heat. Loops can be horizontal, vertical or placed in a body of water, depending on the property.
Open-loop systems
An open-loop system draws groundwater from a well, passes it through the heat pump and returns or discharges it. It requires adequate water quantity and quality and compliance with local requirements.
Service considerations
Each type has its own components to maintain, including pumps, flow controls and heat exchangers. Experience matters. Brett Santacroce has worked on WaterFurnace systems in both configurations.
