AC Not Cooling? Causes and Fixes in Myrtle Beach

If your air conditioner is running but your home will not cool down, the cause is usually one of a handful of problems. Some are simple. Others need a technician.

Common causes

Dirty air filter or restricted airflow

A clogged filter or blocked return starves the system of air, reducing cooling and sometimes freezing the coil.

Frozen evaporator coil

Ice on the indoor coil blocks airflow. It usually points to low airflow or a refrigerant problem.

Low refrigerant

Refrigerant does not get used up. If the level is low, there is a leak that needs to be found and repaired.

Failed capacitor or contactor

These electrical parts start the compressor and fans. When they fail, the outdoor unit may hum, click or not start.

Dirty outdoor coil

A coil caked with debris, pollen or salt cannot release heat, and the system struggles.

Undersized or aging equipment

On the hottest days, a system that is too small or worn out may simply fall short.

What you can safely check

  • Check that the thermostat is set to Cool and the setpoint is below the room temperature.
  • Replace a dirty air filter.
  • Make sure supply vents and returns are open and not blocked.
  • Look at the outdoor unit: is the fan running, and is the area around it clear?
  • Check for ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines. If you see ice, turn the system off to let it thaw.

When to call a professional. Call a technician if the outdoor unit is not running, there is ice that returns, the system runs constantly without cooling, there is water leaking, or you hear unusual noises. Never open electrical panels or remove access covers on equipment. If you smell burning or see smoke, turn off power and call 911 if there is any danger.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Most often the cause is restricted airflow, a frozen coil, low refrigerant or an electrical component failure. A technician can test the system to find out which.

How long should an AC take to cool my house?

It varies with the size of the home, outdoor temperature and system capacity. A system that runs for hours without making progress needs attention.

Can I add refrigerant myself?

No. Handling refrigerant requires certification, and a low level indicates a leak that must be repaired.
